The Danger of a “Safe” Place: Comfortable Disobedience

Why does it sometimes feel so difficult to make the changes necessary for our growth and development? When God gives you discernment about what needs to change and wisdom about how to change it, why do hesitation and reluctance still rise up?

Scripture reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5–6). Growth often requires surrendering what feels familiar for what is truly faithful. We must remember that our perspective is limited, but God’s is eternal.

Jesus Himself pointed to the fragility of human life, saying, “See how the flowers of the field grow… even Solomon in all his splendor was not dressed like one of these” (Matthew 6:28–29). We are here today and gone tomorrow; how then can we assume we know better than our Creator? When the Spirit of God prompts you—whether to forgive, to step out, to move forward, or to let go—obedience is not optional; it is essential. “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says” (James 1:22). Consider the Israelites. Though they were severely oppressed in Egypt (Exodus 1:13–14), they eventually grew accustomed to it. Their suffering became their “normal,” and when God delivered them, they longed to return to what was familiar (Numbers 11:4–6). READ MORE —>

Psychologically, this reflects how humans can adapt even to unhealthy environments when they become predictable. Yet that “safe” place had already begun to shape their identity in ways that conflicted with who God called them to be.

Similarly, when God calls you out of a place—whether clearly harmful or deceptively comfortable—it is because He is forming something deeper within you. “Do not be conformed to this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:2). Remaining in a place simply because it feels safe may cost you the development of godly character, spiritual maturity, and your God-given identity.

The longer we delay obedience, the greater the risk of losing what God is trying to build in us. Yet we can stand on this promise: “No good thing does He withhold from those who walk uprightly” (Psalm 84:11). Obedience is evidence of that upright walk.

Trust Him. Move when He says move. Let go when He says release. Growth may feel uncomfortable, but it is always purposeful in the hands of God.

Prayer:

Lord, help me to trust You beyond what feels familiar and safe. Give me the courage to obey Your voice, even when it stretches me, and remind me that Your plans are always for my growth and good. Shape my character, strengthen my faith, and lead me fully into the identity You have called me to walk in. In Jesus’ name, amen.
