The Wonder of Dawn and Dusk
God stirs within me a deep instinct for the many wonders in His creation, wonders I find myself pondering again and again. This experience opens up insight into heavenly realms, and the delight floods my heart and soul with joy unspeakable and full of glory. Have you ever noticed that the sky at dawn looks just like the sky at dusk?
Evening Before Morning
That’s because in God’s order, evening comes first. “There was evening, and there was morning — the first day.” (Genesis 1:5) That’s a beautiful thing to notice — and it connects to something deep in Scripture. In Genesis 1, each day of creation is marked “and there was evening, and there was morning” — evening comes first. So in the biblical pattern, sunset doesn’t end the day; it begins the next one. This similarity can be described as a shared “blue hour” quality — a soft blue light lingering, quiet, before the day begins or after it ends.
The Quiet Before the Light
It is the most delightful moment for me, when the sky at dawn is a cool, deep blue all over — a soft blue light lingering, quiet before the day begins. At dusk, you feel a settling, resting, quiet atmosphere, with a faded orange glow that fades into deep blue as the day gives way. At dawn, there is a fresh, awakening, quiet, and hopeful feel. The sky is calm, deep blue, and still — not because nothing is happening, but because the light is already on its way, just not visible yet. The sky, in its stillness, seems to bow in worship before God, waiting in hope for the appearance of light. Then it brightens slowly, a cool blue giving way to a thin edge of gold near the horizon. I watch this every evening and morning. It appears there is silence in the atmosphere, but it is not silence, because I know beyond doubt that something is happening. I can feel the wonder in the atmosphere, as if it is asking: What next? Will the sunlight appear today? How soon will it appear? I tell you, it’s the most awe-inspiring time, and I love it because I stay in the wonder until sunlight appears on the horizon. That too is a wonder to behold. God’s creation is breathtaking, with wonder beyond imagination.
God's Glory in Creation
This is the time after the sun goes down at dusk and before the sun rises at dawn. I encourage you to watch it. God’s wonder in creation amazes me — it’s so exciting. This similarity that I witness daily between dawn and dusk is not a coincidence but is all part of God’s ordination. This twilight, closing one day and opening the next, makes both look the same, giving us hope and trust in the God of all creation who cares for us.
A New Thing
In this most exhilarating moment, we hear the echoes of Isaiah 43:18-19: “Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.”
And in Revelation 21:5, God says, “Behold, I am making all things new.”
In this new day, God is giving you a fresh start in life and asking you to step into the new path He has created for you. His promise is to make a way by clearing through the difficult and hard situations of the past. There is suddenly unexpected help. Embrace and walk in this place of joy, gladness, and hope, and let go of the past.
At Sunset, Watch for the Sunrise
Every dusk promises that morning is already on its way. Each sunset you have ever watched was not an ending — it was your next morning being born. What looked like an ending was already a beginning. I declare: whatever “sunset” you’re walking through right now — whether it’s a closed door or a difficult situation — it is not the end of your story. The stage for a new day, a new thing, is being set for you. Lamentations 3:22-23 says, “His mercies are new every morning.”
At sunset, watch for the sunrise.
Prayer
His mercies are new every morning, and they never run out. At sunset, look out for the sunrise coming in the morning. Father God, thank You that there is no darkness in You, and we are walking in the light of Your countenance. He that believes in You shall never walk in darkness but shall walk in the light of life. Thank You, Lord, that You never leave us in the dark. There is always a beginning at the end of every journey. Amen! Abba Father, thank You that no ending You allow is really an ending. The new is just about to begin. Give us eyes to see the morning You are already writing. In Jesus’ Name, Amen!
