Above Every Empire: His Everlasting Kingdom

Kingdoms come and kingdoms go. Even the strongest kingdoms history has ever seen — the Persian Empire, the Roman Empire, and the Mongol Empire — rose to staggering power and influence, only to fade, fracture, and fall. Persia once linked three continents by roads and administration, ruling vast ancient centers of civilization. Rome organized the Mediterranean world with law, armies, and infrastructure that shaped nations long after its collapse. The Mongol Empire became the largest continuous land empire in history through unmatched mobility and military strategy, stretching across Asia and into Europe.

Their glory was real, but it was temporary. Their power was impressive, but it was borrowed.

Even these kingdoms do not compare to the kingdom of God.

The kingdom of God is “a kingdom that shall never be destroyed” and “shall stand forever.” It is not built by human hands, not sustained by human strength, and not limited by human timelines. No man, woman, child, ruler, or earthly system has, can, or will ever displace the King of this kingdom or His reign.

His kingdom is from everlasting to everlasting. He is the One who “removes kings and sets up kings,” granting and limiting the power of every earthly ruler. Any visibility, might, or legacy the great empires of history possessed was only possible because He allowed it. What true power did they really have apart from the strength and favor granted by the King of kings?

His reign is holy forever: “Your decrees are very trustworthy; holiness befits your house, O Lord, forevermore.” (Psalm 93:5)

Holiness marks His house, not for a century or an era, but forever. No other reign is holier, mightier, stronger, or more enduring. He is “mightier than the thunders of many waters,” His voice breaking what seems unbreakable and commanding creation itself. The sun, moon, and stars move at His word and remain sustained by His will. This is the kingdom we belong to.

May we deeply internalize the identity we receive as citizens of this kingdom. We are not defined by fragile human systems, shifting political powers, or temporary earthly status. We belong to “a kingdom that cannot be shaken,” and that reality reorders our courage, our hope, and our obedience. No threat to our physical lives, no trial, no tribulation, and no earthly loss can ultimately weaken our resolve or strip us of hope, because our lives are hidden with Christ in God and secured under His rule.

His kingdom has come in Christ, and His will continues to be done on earth as it is in heaven. One day, all other kingdoms, ancient and modern, remembered and forgotten, will be fully and finally overshadowed as the kingdom of this world becomes the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever.

Glory to this King and to His unshakable, everlasting kingdom.

PRAYER

Lord, thank You that every empire has a limit, but Your kingdom has none. Anchor my heart in Your unshakable rule, not in the fragile powers of this world. Remind me daily that I am a citizen of Your everlasting kingdom. Strengthen my faith in trials, steady my hope in uncertainty, and align my life with Your will on earth as it is in heaven.
