Walking in God-Given Authority- PART 1

From the very beginning, God established something powerful about you: “So God created man in His own image… Then God blessed them and said… ‘Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground’” (Genesis 1:27–28).

You were not created to live powerless—you were created to rule, to steward, to carry divine authority on the earth as God’s image-bearer. This authority was never about control for selfish gain; it was about alignment with God’s rule and representation of His kingdom. But through sin, humanity distorted that authority—either by abandoning it or misusing it.

Through Christ, that authority is restored.

Jesus reminds us in Luke 10:19:“Behold, I have given you authority… to trample on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you.” This is not symbolic language alone—it is spiritual reality. You have authority over the enemy, over darkness, over the forces that attempt to oppress, deceive, and destroy.

Jesus also declares: “Whoever believes in Me… will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things” (John 14:12).“Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons” (Matthew 10:8).“If you have faith… you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move” (Matthew 17:20).

This is the language of authority.

Yet many believers live as if they are powerless—intimidated by circumstances, ruled by fear, and defeated by internal struggles. Why? Because authority unexercised feels like authority that does not exist.

Psychologically, this connects to what is known as an external locus of control—the belief that life is happening to you rather than that you have agency within it. When this mindset dominates, people feel helpless, passive, and stuck.

But Scripture calls you into an internal, God-anchored authority, not self-sufficiency, but God-confidence. Your authority is not rooted in your feelings; it is rooted in your identity and your alignment with Christ.

You do not command mountains because you are powerful. You command mountains because you are authorized.

There is a difference.

Authority requires:

  • Knowing who you are (created in God’s image)

  • Knowing what you’ve been given (power through Christ)

  • And actually using it (speaking, acting, believing)

If you do not exercise authority, fear will. If you do not take dominion, something else will take dominion over you—your thoughts, your emotions, your habits, or your environment. But that is not your design.

You were created to reign under God, not to be ruled by everything around you.

So speak. Stand. Command what is out of order to come into alignment with God’s will. Resist the enemy. Walk in boldness—not arrogance, but divine confidence.

Because when you walk in God-given authority, you are not trying to become powerful—you are simply living like who you already are.

Prayer

Father, awaken me to the authority You have given me. Teach me to walk boldly in alignment with Your will. Break every mindset of fear, passivity, and powerlessness, and replace it with truth. Help me to exercise authority with wisdom, humility, and faith. In Jesus’ name, amen.
