Confidence Rooted in Christ: Part 1 The Foundation of Confidence

Reflection

Today in the gym, I had a moment that revealed more than just what my body could lift. I hit a single at 455 pounds, though I had intended to get at least three reps. Then I moved up to 485 pounds, and while I was giving myself my usual hype-up words — “you got this, let’s go, let’s go” — I realized that, inside, I was not fully believing what I was saying. The words were there, but the confidence was not as strong as it has been in the past. That moment surprised me, especially because I have been recovering from a knee injury, and today was the first time in a while that my knees actually felt stronger and healthier.

That experience reminded me that confidence is not just hype, and belief is not just something we say out loud. Belief is the foundation, and confidence is what flows from that foundation into action. When belief is rooted in Christ, confidence becomes more stable because it is not based only on feelings, past success, or how strong we feel in the moment. It is based on who God is and what He has already done.

Paul gives us this kind of confidence in 2 Timothy 1:12: “I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.” That is not shallow optimism. That is conviction. Hebrews 10:35 also says, “Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward.” True confidence can only remain steady when it is anchored in something secure.

Belief is more stable and internal because it reflects a deeper conviction about who God is and who we are in Him. We must be convinced that Jesus is our Savior and Redeemer, or our confidence will continue to waver, especially in trials and testing. Without that conviction, we can be easily shaken, confused, or deceived when confidence drops. But when we are built on Christ, we are no longer standing on feelings or performance. We are standing on truth. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).

This is why trials matter. Romans 5:3-4 says, “tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope.” Hard seasons produce endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope. God often strengthens us through the very places that test us. In that sense, confidence grows through surviving, obeying, and trusting Him in adversity.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego are a strong example of this kind of confidence. In Daniel 3:17-18, they said, “Our God whom we serve is able to deliver us… But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods.” Their confidence was not based only on the outcome they wanted. It was based on who God is. They trusted His power, but they also trusted His wisdom if He chose a different outcome.

Jesus also modeled this kind of confidence. Hebrews 12:2 says that He endured the cross “for the joy that was set before him.” He was not ruled by immediate pain, but by the certainty of the Father’s will and the glory ahead. That is the kind of confidence believers are called to live with: not denial of difficulty, but deep trust in God’s character and promises.

Confidence depends not just on hype, but on evidence. For the believer, that evidence includes remembering God’s past deliverance, His mercy, His grace, and His promises. It also includes physical trust, meaning we keep stepping into God’s presence and moving forward even when we feel weak or uncertain. And it includes psychological readiness, which is the steady re-centering of our minds on who we are in Christ and who God is in His power.

That is why moments of uncertainty can still be holy moments. Even in training, there are times when the body feels stronger, but the mind has not fully caught up. You may speak words of courage, yet realize that your confidence is still being rebuilt. That does not mean your words are false. It means God is teaching you to trust Him more deeply while your inner conviction catches up with your outward declaration. In those moments, the goal is not to force a feeling, but to return to truth.

When belief is strong, confidence becomes easier to build because setbacks shake us less. When belief is weak, confidence becomes fragile because it depends too much on short-term results. But when we die daily to ourselves and live rooted in Christ, belief becomes internalized, steady, and secure. Then our confidence is not loud because we are pretending. It is strong because we are persuaded.

Living the Word

Ask yourself today:

• Is my confidence built upon recent successes, or upon Christ Himself?

• What circumstances have recently challenged my confidence?

• How has God proven His faithfulness in previous seasons of my life?

• In what area is God inviting me to trust His character rather than my feelings?

Spend time remembering God's faithfulness. Let His past faithfulness strengthen your present confidence, and allow His promises to shape your future hope.

Prayer

Father, strengthen my belief where it has become weak. Root me more deeply in Christ so that my confidence will no longer depend upon feelings, circumstances, outcomes, or human approval. Teach me to trust You in the fire, in seasons of waiting, and throughout the process of becoming more like Christ. Renew my mind, establish my heart upon Your truth, and make my confidence a reflection of who You are rather than how I feel. Like Paul, may I confidently declare that I know whom I have believed. In Jesus' name, Amen.
