Then You Will Know That I Am the LORD: God's Signature on Reality

We take pride in people knowing who we are. It confirms our identity.

We also take pride in people knowing what we have done. Artists sign their work. Inventors file patents. Authors place their names on the cover so readers know who produced the work they admire.

In a way, God does this too—but not because He needs validation.

Throughout Scripture, especially in the book of Ezekiel, the phrase "Then you will know that I am the LORD" appears again and again (Ezekiel 6:7; 20:44; 36:23; 37:6, 13–14; 38:23). God repeatedly attaches His name to His mighty acts in history.

Why would the Creator of heaven and earth—the One who is exalted above all (Psalm 97:9)—place His "signature" on His works?

It is for our sake—and for His name's sake.

Sin creates a powerful illusion. It distorts reality until other "lords" appear more immediate, more powerful, or more relevant than the living God (Romans 1:21–23). We begin to live as though nations, fears, idols, circumstances, or even our wounds are ultimate.

We need to be delivered not only from this world's evil but also from its lies. We need to be brought into reality (John 8:31–32).

That reality is this:

He, and He alone, is the LORD.

• He is the One who brings life into dry bones (Ezekiel 37:1–14).

• He is the One who destroys Gog and every hostile power that exalts itself against His people (Ezekiel 38–39).

• He is the One who reunites Israel and Judah, heals what is divided, and restores what appears permanently broken (Ezekiel 37:15–28).

• He is the One who judges evil while remaining merciful to His covenant people (Ezekiel 20:33–44; Exodus 34:6–7).

When God says, "Then you will know that I am the LORD," He is not flexing His ego.

He is rescuing our perception.

He is reclaiming our imagination from false gods and false stories.

He is stamping His name on both judgment and mercy, on tearing down and raising up, so that we rightly recognize who has acted and what kind of God He is (Exodus 7:5, 17; Ezekiel 36:22–23; 38:23).

And it is also for His name's sake.

God's name is not merely a title. His name reveals His character—His holiness, faithfulness, justice, mercy, and covenant love (Exodus 3:14–15; 34:6–7; Psalm 106:8).

Therefore, when He acts, He acts consistently with His character.

When He saves, He reveals His holiness (Ezekiel 36:23).

When He judges, He displays His righteousness (Ezekiel 7:27; 18:30–32).

When He restores, He demonstrates His steadfast love and covenant faithfulness (Ezekiel 37:26–28; Hosea 2:19–20).

His "signature" upon His righteous acts is not an optional flourish.

It is the unveiling of His name.

It keeps us from crediting idols, chance, human strength, or darkness with what belongs to Him alone (Isaiah 42:8; 48:11).

It guards His glory.

And it guards our hearts.

So whenever God says,

"Then you will know that I am the LORD,"

He is inviting us into the truest knowledge of all:

To see Him clearly.

To name Him rightly.

And to live in a world where His character—not sin's illusion—is the defining reality.

Exhortation

Ask yourself today: What has been shaping my perception of reality?

Is it fear?

Disappointment?

Success?

The opinions of others?

Or is it the self-revelation of God in His Word?

The more clearly we know who God is, the more clearly we understand everything else.

Prayer

Lord, You see the valleys of dry bones in my life—the places where hope feels gone and I feel cut off. You are the One who opens graves and brings Your people up from them.

You are the One who breathes life by Your Spirit into what appears dead.

Today, breathe upon the dry bones within me.

Speak over my despair, my fear, and my shame: "Then you will know that I am the LORD." Reorient my vision so that I see You as Lord over my past, my present, and my future. Let Ezekiel 37 become my testimony: That I know You are the LORD, because You have spoken, You have acted, and You have brought me to life.
