Identity Rewritten: Living as a New Creation in Christ

Identities are so important. The first identity we know comes from the name we are given at birth. As we age, that identity deepens through our behavior, family story, culture, and status. These labels—whether praised or despised—often shape how life feels on earth: joy, misery, or something in between. But no legal change of name and no human label can truly recreate a person. Only the identity change performed by Christ makes us new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17).

This new identity in Christ is not just a better label; it is a new-creation reality. In Christ we are called children of God, blessed with every spiritual blessing, accepted in the Beloved, and given a peace the world cannot give (1 John 3:1; Ephesians 1:3, 6; John 14:27). Under the new covenant, our core identity is no longer sinner, failure, rejected, or abandoned; it is beloved, forgiven, redeemed, and united with Christ. Jesus says, “I am the vine; you are the branches… apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). The branch does not struggle to become part of the vine; it simply abides and draws life. In the same way, who you are now flows from your union with Christ, not from the labels of your past.

From a psychological perspective, the labels we carry become lenses. Core beliefs like “I am unlovable” or “I am a failure” filter how we see ourselves and our world. We tend to live in ways that match the identity we most deeply believe. But the gospel gives a different core belief: in Christ, you are loved, chosen, adopted, redeemed, and empowered. Under the new covenant, God does not just tell you to think differently; He gives you a new heart and a new Spirit and writes His law on your heart (Ezekiel 36:26–27; Jeremiah 31:33). He calls you to be “transformed by the renewal of your mind,” learning to agree with what He has already declared about you in Christ (Romans 12:2; Romans 8:16; Ephesians 4:22–24).

Because you are in Christ, even your emotional life is invited into this identity. Happiness rises and falls with circumstances; joy is anchored in Him. Jesus says He has spoken His words so that His joy may be in you and your joy may be full (John 15:11). He came that you might have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10). This new identity carries authority over the labels of darkness: Christ has disarmed the rulers and authorities, delivered you from the domain of darkness, and made you an overcomer by His blood and by the word of your testimony (Colossians 1:13; 2:15; Revelation 12:11).

So thank You, Lord. I speak against every label I have ascribed to myself and to others—spouses, siblings, profession, friends, house, ministry. I renounce every identity rooted in sin, shame, fear, performance, or human opinion. I accept only the identities that God Himself ascribes: child of God, friend of Christ, temple of the Holy Spirit, God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus for good works, more than a conqueror through Him who loved me (John 1:12; John 15:15; 1 Corinthians 6:19; Ephesians 2:10; Romans 8:37).

Because I am in Christ, I receive and agree with the identity God has spoken over me. My identity is love, joy, and peace—the fruit of the Spirit in me as I abide in Christ (Galatians 5:22–23; John 15:4–5, 11).I do not have to live ruled by anxiety; instead, I bring everything to God in prayer and thanksgiving (Philippians 4:6–7). I am full of joy, because the joy of Jesus is in me. I am peaceful, because the peace of God guards my heart and mind in Christ Jesus.

Today I choose to live as a person of the new covenant: abiding in the Vine, walking in the Spirit, and allowing every earthly label to bow to the name of Jesus written over my life. My name, my story, my past, and my future are now held inside His identity. I am in Him, and He is in me—and that is the truest thing about me.

Prayer

Jesus, my true life and my only Savior, thank You for giving me a new identity in Your new covenant. I renounce every false label and every lie I have believed about myself. Teach me to agree with what You say about me and to live from who I am in You. Fill me with Your Spirit today—love, joy, and peace flowing from Your life in me. Amen.

Call to action / challenge

  • One lie to renounce: Today, name one old label or lie you have carried (for example, “I am a failure,” “I am unlovable”) and deliberately lay it down before God.

  • One truth to embrace: Choose one truth from this devotion (for example, “I am a child of God,” “My identity is love, joy, and peace”) and speak it out loud several times today—especially when the old label tries to surface.

  • One step of abiding: Take 5 quiet minutes to sit with John 15:5 or 2 Corinthians 5:17, and simply tell Jesus, “I am in You, and You are in me. Let me live like this is true today.”
