Which Tree Will You Live Under? From Eden’s Curse to Calvary’s Blessing

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree’—so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.” Galatians 3:13–14

Under God’s holy law, our sin did not just make us “a little broken”; it placed us under a real, objective curse. To be cursed in the biblical sense is to stand under God’s just judgment—exposed, rejected, defiled, cut off from His presence and His people. The curse says: guilty, unclean, unworthy of blessing, fit only for wrath.

That is what our rebellion deserved.

Yet Christ paid the full price to set us free from the curse of the law. He absorbed the curse completely as He became a curse in our place. When He was lifted up on the wooden cross—the “tree”—He took the position of the man in Deuteronomy whose exposed body was the public sign of divine curse and rejection. He hung there as the sinless, perfect Son of God, wearing our verdict so that we never again would have to.

Pause and let that settle: the One who had only ever known the Father’s delight chose to stand where we should have stood—shameful, rejected, treated as defiled, cut off, and condemned. Every label that rightly belonged to the rebel heart—shameful, rejected, despised, unclean—was placed on Him, so that every label that belonged to Him—beloved, accepted, righteous, holy—could be placed on us.

Do you really understand what this means?

It means no curse can finally cling to the one who is in Christ. No accusation, no generational pattern, no word spoken over you, no self-pronounced judgment can override the verdict that was settled at the cross. When Jesus became a curse for you, He broke the power of the strongest curse you could ever face: the holy, just condemnation of God’s law against your sin.

In Christ, you are no longer named by your shame. You are no longer defined by “rejected,” “despicable,” “unclean,” or “too far gone.” In Him you receive a new story: blessed, restored, forgiven, healed, brought into communion, and given eternal life. You are seated with Christ in heavenly places, not left hanging under judgment. You are clothed with Christ, not exposed in your sin.

So why live as if you are still cursed?

Why agree with words of curse spoken over your life? Why rehearse memories of failure until they become your identity? Why pronounce judgment on yourself with your own mouth—“I’m worthless, I’ll never change, this is just who I am”—when the Son of God has already carried that curse away?

Going back to a cursed identity is like Adam returning to the forbidden tree after the Lord has already opened a new and living way. At Eden’s tree, humanity chose disobedience and brought the curse of death into the world. At Calvary’s tree, the obedient Son chose the cross and removed that curse, opening the way to blessing and the gift of the Spirit. The question now is: which tree will you live under?

You do not have to keep eating from Adam’s tree—feeding on lies of shame, self-hatred, fear, and self-salvation. You are invited to continually “eat” and abide in the Tree of Life, Jesus Himself: to draw your identity, your hope, your future, and your strength from the One who hung on the tree for you. In Him, the curse is not just weakened; it is broken. In Him, you are not just a survivor; you are an heir of blessing.

Today, bring every cursed label to the foot of the cross. Name it before God. Then, in faith, exchange it for what Christ has purchased for you: blessing instead of curse, beauty instead of ashes, praise instead of despair. Choose, again and again, to live under Calvary’s tree—not Eden’s.

Because Christ became a curse in your place, you are free to live as deeply, irrevocably blessed.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, thank You for becoming a curse for me so that I could live under Your blessing instead of my shame. You hung on the tree in my place and broke the power of every curse that stood against me. Today I renounce every label of “rejected, unclean, worthless, beyond hope,” and I receive Your truth: in You I am loved, forgiven, and made righteous. Teach me to abide in You as my Tree of Life—draw my thoughts, desires, and identity into Your presence. Holy Spirit, fill me with the confidence of a child who is fully accepted and fully free. Amen.
